2017 Northeast Regional Conference
(From left to right: Liz, Donna, Haddie)
The Northeast Regional Conference was held July 12-14th, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Haddie Weber, Donna Watson and Liz Oskin represented the chapter. While Haddie is a veteran regional conference participant, for Donna and Liz, this one was their first.
Highlights of this conference included: stepping out of Chapter boundaries and seeing the bigger picture of DKG; the opening ceremony especially the presentation of flag; Ontario night entertainment especially the Karen Schuessler Singers; and, the diversity of topics at the breakout sessions.
Liz was especially moved by speaker/performer Mike Stevens, a professional harmonica player, who spoke at the Impacting the World with Music Banquet. According to Liz, “His work as a musician has taken him to the most remote, isolated, fly-in only part of northern Canada. While visiting the area, he was exposed to the serious issue of poverty among the indigenous community of the region. The community experiences the worst levels of teen suicide in the world. He brought to light the dangerous and often fatal practice of “gas sniffing” among the youth. He has established a charity titled Artscan, which brings instruments to the children of this area with the hopes of instilling a sense of self-expression and promise
for the future. Artscan’s website address is: www.artscancircle.ca”
Sounds like time at the NE Regional was time very well spent!!!
